Long Bio
Here are some random statements about me.
  • I am extremely optimistic. I love life and I think that every unique experience is an amazing gift. Eighty years isn't nearly enough, but I want to make the most of what I do get.
  • I am a hopeless romantic, and I think there's nothing better than really being in love. I paradoxically don't show my emotions all that often.
  • I am a huge nerd, but I think that's pretty cool. Some people think I'm arrogant, and I don't think that's very cool.
  • I want to be a university professor in computer science. I love open source.
  • I think religion and metaphysical claims in general are absurd and detrimental to human progress. Irrationality leads to violence.
  • I grew up in southern Minnesota.
  • I lived in The Netherlands for a total of 2.5 years. I speak Dutch, which is the second ugliest language I've ever heard. German is like French in comparison.
  • I really want to learn more languages. I'm especially interested in Russian, Mandarin, and Arabic.
  • I have travelled to about 25 countries, but that's not nearly enough.
  • I think reading Nietzsche is hilarious. Especially in German.
  • I still have dreams of becoming a rockstar, even though I'm about to outlive Kurt Cobain without ever having gone on tour.
  • I am extremely picky about music. I mostly like music to which you can't dance. That includes opera.
  • I tend to have strong opinions about things and kid myself that the reasons behind them are coherent, but I know that I'm just as contradictory as anyone else. I tried to solve this by studying philosophy but it didn't help.
  • I am extremely addicted to coffee and the internet. I guess that's pretty stereotypical.
  • I wish I read more.
  • I hate tobacco and think its power isn't given the respect it deserves.
  • I like to be challenged and to do creative things. I agree with Knuth that programming is an art form.
  • I lean to the far left in politics. I was an undergrad radical, and at one point gave most of my possessions away for no reason. I've since tempered this tendency. I still despise television though.
  • I love film, but I hate crappy movies.
  • I have been a vegetarian since late 2002.
  • I hate wearing shoes.
